[ 2003 ]

From the 7th to the 10th of August 2003, the Chaos Communication Camp 2003 took place in Altlandsberg, Germany. We were there.

We had digital cameras, a camcorder, a GPS device, laptops and an internet connection (and a djembe), and we documented our entire trip right here.

Three of us headed out from Leytonstone in the trusty Bluebird, (sadly no longer on the road due to theft) by way of Harwich, the North Sea, the Hook of Holland and 450 miles of European motorway. Our fourth member joined us from Spain. And we met our fifth member quite spontaneously at the Camp.

The Big Adventure is over for now. So what was it like? It was like a low intensity Glastonbury. It was one of the friendliest places I've ever been to. It was a place where everybody was willing to share everything. It was educational. Inspirational. A place where everybody was interested in the same things, where everybody spoke the same language. It was utterly fantastic.

Thank you to all the lovely people we met, especially Steve, Christian, Bolde, Simon and Helene, Norbert, the man in the coffee van, David in the Gimp tent, the two Italian guys who borrowed our crimp tool, and everyone who let us share their equipment. It wouldn't have been the same without you.

There are now a load more pictures here

And if by some random chance you've stumbled onto this site looking for information about CCC 2007, well yes, of course we're going. Details are here

The big day has arrived, and it's 30 degrees in London. Let's have a look at the 5-day forecast for Berlin. Hmm. Think we'd best stock up on SPF25...

Well, we're here. Ten hours from the ferry to the campground. No network or power yet. Hmm. Today's interesting fact: the trusty Bluebird does 100mph...

Al has just been interviewed by the BBC. This may or may not be on BBC World and / or BBC News 24 on Sunday. What have we learned from this? That TV is entirely fake...

Hacking is not a crime. However it seems that having an incredibly dirty car with 'CCC 2003: So long and thanks for all the fish' written in the dust is grounds for suspicion if you're a bored French Customs Officer. Yes, the Bluebird was thoroughly searched. This truly is the roadtrip that just keeps on giving...

PS. If the images at the top of the page look a bit strange, it's because Internet Explorer doesn't know how to render transparent PNGs properly. Microsoft: How much contempt for your open standards would you like us to show today?
